Bedworth's existing site was built in 1974 and is nearing the end of its shelf life. It needs replacing in order to provide a fit for purpose facility for the residents and borough.
Bedworth's current leisure centre will remain open throughout the construction of the new Physical Activity Hub, and it will be demolished once the new building is open.
Due to the needs of the build, there may be some impact on the outdoor small all-weather football pitch and some of the rear car park. However, the impact on the current centre will be kept to a minimum wherever possible.
All current membership will remain valid throughout the construction period. There will be no changes to the facilities available, operator or access until the new building has opened.
October / November 2022.
2 years.
The planned opening date is June 2024.
We are aiming for BREEAM - an assessment of a building's environmental, social and economic sustainability performance. BREEAM rated buildings are more sustainable environments that enhance the wellbeing of the people who live and work in them and help protect natural resources.
There are a number of green initiatives we are looking to implement:
We are waiting for the contractor's input before we review the potential access routes and changes that may be required. We will update this website with any changes.
No - the funding we have received has been approved for this project only and, if not used on this project, it would need to be given back.
The facilities include:

The existing swimming pool at Bedworth Leisure Centre is a 6 lane 25-metre swimming pool. The new pool in the Bedworth Physical Activity Hub will be an 8 lane 25-metre pool.
Yes, the Physical Activity Hub will be accessible to all. The facility has large circulation areas, changing places facilities, accessible toilets and changing rooms and pool pods for access into the swimming pool.
Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council are currently going through a procurement process to appoint a leisure operator to run the new Physical Activity Hub. The new operator will be announced once this process has been completed.
Yes, the new facility has a café in the plan. There will be a large seating area for approximately 100 people, and a south-facing terrace overlooking the park.
The new car park will have 158 spaces, which is an additional 54 spaces compared to the current car park. 10 of these will be EV charging bays.
The current facility provides 3 hours of free parking. At this stage, we cannot predict if or when any changes will be made to this arrangement.
We are encouraging users to walk to the facility by developing the green corridor from Bedworth town centre and making improvements to the footpaths.
There will be more bicycle racks provided to encourage visitors to cycle to the Physical Activity Hub.
The facilities in Miners' Welfare Park will be accessible to all. These include:

There has been investment into the Tennis and Netball court facilities within the park, and these will be opening in February / March 2022. They have been resurfaced, the fencing and floodlighting have been improved, and they will have pin code access gained through online booking.
An improved ‘Green Corridor’ route will be created from Bedworth Town Centre to the Hub as part of the Levelling Up Fund works.
There will be further improvements to other areas of the park in the next few years using ‘planning gain’ sums from housing developments, but the exact detail of these is yet to be decided. The improvements are planned to include widened paths with better surfaces, entrance improvements, new signage and more.
Any work will be undertaken sensitively, with impact on the park kept to a minimum.
A circular path around the park will remain throughout the construction period. This may change at different times throughout the build as necessary and may alter in length. Once construction is complete there will be a new circular path around the park.
Work will be carried out to develop a green corridor linking the town centre all the way to the Physical Activity Hub. This will be done by improving footpath accessibility, lighting up paths and improving the surrounding environment.
We believe that the addition of new facilities in the park, more residents visiting the area, and improved walking routes will support reducing anti-social behaviour within the park. The new facilities will also provide more opportunities for physical activity participation in the community.
Wildlife surveys and a ‘biodiversity impact calculation’ have been done to ensure any loss of habitats and trees are balanced with new habitat creation and new tree planting.
Ecological, Tree and Protected Species survey work has been carried out for the impacted land, and ‘mitigation’ planned into the proposals.
A biodiversity impact calculation has been done to ensure that any loss of habitats or trees are balanced with new habitat creation and new tree planting. A construction management plan will control temporary impacts during the build.
Lighting proposals will be required to control light spill to minimise impacts on wildlife.
Yes - we are working with our ecologist, BSG, to determine how many trees wil be removed and the action that will need to be taken to reduce this impact.
The skate park will be replaced with a new concrete park alongside a tarmac pump track as an all-wheels park. The current skatepark will have to close for the start of the Bedworth Physical Activity works in autumn 2022.
It is predicted that it will take up to two years for the new facilities to be completed and opened, depending how the delivery sits within the overall construction programme for the Bedworth Physical Activity Hub. However, we will try to deliver the all-wheels park earlier in the programme if that is possible.
Public consultation on the all-wheels park closes on 14th August 2022. The design will then be finalised, taking comments onboard within the available space and budget.
The new all-wheels park will be a little further south, within the short mown park area. The new Physical Activity Hub will cover the site of the current skate park.
The location for the new all-wheels park is on short mown grassland, so the impact on wildlife will be minimal.
Precautionary measures are required as part of planning conditions, including a Construction Management Plan.
A Biodiversity Impact Assessment for the entire project was also required to measure the effect on wildlife as part of the planning permission process.
Construction work on the mountain bike trails and the Sanctuary event have led to disturbed ground in Miners' Welfare Park. Grass seeding will be carried out to repair this in the Autumn when the ground is wetter.
Future works will cause further disruption to the park during the building phase of the project. However, we will minimise this as much as possible.
Miner's Welfare Park is quite a compact site, so the decision to increase the range of free-to-use outdoor facilities has been balanced with ensuring that we keep as much open parkland as possible.
Although some parkland will be used, high quality green spaces will remain or be created around the new features.
Park users can also explore the Black Bank Meadows and Bayton Lake areas leading to and beyond the railway line. These offer quiet walking routes and the paths will be enhanced in the coming years to improve access to these parts of the park.
